With Earth Day coming up, people are looking for ways to help the
environment and a popular activity is recycling. And while it’s
important to reuse items such as paper, plastic and even cellular
phones, you can also make a difference by making a junk car donation to
charity. Along with helping a worthy cause and possibly getting a nice
tax write-off in the process, you’ll also be helping to recycle
thousands of pounds of used scrap metal, creating an environmental
savings that’s comparable to countless soda cans.
Not only do car donations for charity help recycle parts, they also help
the environment in other ways. Many older cars are not environmentally
sound, spewing tons of toxic gases and pollutants into the air. Donating
these cars to charity helps to get these cars off of the road; in some
cases, people will buy them and scrap them for parts, while in other
cases people will salvage these cars and get them running smoother and
more environmentally friendly.
Junk cars can also seep oil, coolant and other harmful liquids into
groundwater and topsoil, damaging the environment for years to come.
Donating a vehicle that is sitting in your front yard taking up space
can also help you preserve the environment by eliminating a potential
source of contamination. And of course, older cars and other vehicles
are frequently gas guzzlers. Getting these cars off of the road helps to
converse fuel and encourages people to purchase more energy-efficient
vehicles.
Many charities are getting into the act and touting the benefits of
charitable car donations for the environment. One example of this is the
Morris Habitat for Humanity in New Jersey, which recently launched a
car donation campaign tied to the upcoming Earth Day celebration. The
organization used statistics which show that 75 percent of a car’s
materials can be recycled as a way to induce people to donate a car in
New York, New Jersey and other neighboring states to help their mission
of providing shelter to needy working families. This is just one example
of how helping the environment by donating a used car, truck or other
vehicle can also help worthy organizations provide valuable
